Cursusdoelen
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Prepare, execute, analyze and report experimental work;
  2. Be familiar with standard and state-of-the-art measurement techniques in fluid flow applications.
  3. Evaluate and design the most suitable experiment for a formulated research question or application goal;
  4. Combine experimental methods and create application-specific test setups;
  5. Acquire, process, analyze and present measurement data;
  6. Analyze the sources of experimental uncertainties and perform error analyses.
  7. Review academic and industrially oriented test reports
Inhoud
Fundamentals of Experimental Methods in Fluid and  Thermal Engineering will cover the fundamentals of the state-of-the-art experimental methods in Fluid and Energy applications. The topics discussed in this course are:
  • The measurement chain: error and uncertainty analyses;
  • The backbone of the measurement chain: amplifiers, filters, analogic-to-digital data converter, and Wheatstone bridges;
  • Flow velocity and turbulence measurements: physical principles, measurement systems and data interpretation.
  • Force, pressure and temperature measurements: physical principles, measurement systems and data interpretation.
  • Wind tunnel testing and aeroacoustic measurements.

The course is distributed in a set of lectures and laboratory practices. The lectures will introduce the student to the framework of performing experimental measurement campaigns and the principles of measurement techniques along with self-study material. The practical work will be performed in small groups in the laboratory. Basic programming skills are required to handle the datasets. Experiment preparation is mandatory in order to perform the practical work. Experimental work and assignments will be presented in a research paper format. Students will review the work of each other.

The practical work is evaluated and graded. The final grade will be based on the practical work, the paper reviews and a final oral examination.
