After the course has been completed the student is able to:
- Review scientific literature
- Plan & design scientific research
- Systematically process the results of scientific research
- Write scientific documents (Literature Review/Research Proposal/Paper)
- Orally present and discuss scientific research
- Reflect upon the scientific research of peers
The course has been divided into two phases: 1) writing a research proposal an literature study and 2) writing a scientific paper on the (executed) research and giving an oral presentation of the results. |
The details and study load vary for the different pre-master programmes that participate (ME/SET/CEM/CME; EE/S&C/IDE; CS/IST; I-Tech; …). The students receive all relevant information at the start of the course.
In both phases of the course, students are expected to act as the responsible coordinator(s) of their own research project. They will gain support from the course coordinator, the track- specific supervisor and researcher(s) involved with the specific projects. The students will critically reflect on their own work and that of their fellow students by doing a peer review in both phases (mandatory).
- During the first phase, students will write a literature review and a research proposal, based on a more general problem description they receive from one of the research groups in the department. The objective of the literature review is to describe the state of the art of the research subject and to identify gaps in the current knowledge. Based on this, the students write a research proposal in which they further specify their research question(s) and objective(s). At the end of this phase, students submit their literature review (LR) and a research proposal (RP) for assessment (Weight: 40% of total grade) .
- During the second phase, the students execute the proposed research and process the research results. The findings are presented in a scientific paper (in English). At the end of this phase, the paper is submitted for assessment (Weight: 40% of total grade). Additionally, the research results are presented during a conference, where students and supervisors discuss the results. The presentation and participation in the discussion is also part of the assessment (Weight: 20% of total grade).
