Cursusdoelen
After passing the course, the student can:
  1. draw relevant 'free body diagrams' (FBD) of structural parts and apply them to set up equilibrium equations,
  2. evaluate stresses and deformations in simple bar and shaft structures,
  3. formulate equations to evaluate deformation of statically undeterminately supported structutures,
  4. calculate bending moments in beam structures and point out maximum values thereof,
  5. calculate the inertia moment of a beam cross section and apply it to calculate stresses,
  6. calculate deformations of a beam structure

 
Inhoud
This is a part of Module 3 of the Bachelor Industrial Design Engineering. See here for the compete description of this module.

The concepts of tension and strain are introduced and the relation between the two is given. This is applied to rods on which tensile and compressive forces are exerted, and to shafts which are loaded on torsion.
Then the bending of beams is discussed. An expression is derived for the size and distribution of the stresses in a beam section.
The deformation of the beam as a result of a bending moment is derived. This results in expressions for the deformation of beams under elementary load cases such as concentrated forces and distributed loads. These are then applied to the analysis of both statically determined and statically undetermined supported beams.
