After passing the course, the student can:
- recognize and identify the properties of common machine elements
- select standard components for these elements for use in a product design
- apply appropriate variations of elements in a design
- use analytical methods to verify performances - such as life time, stress levels, stability
- determine a load characteristic, create a transmission and select an appropriate electric motor

The course introduces mechanical elements commonly found in devices and products. Although common and similar in shape or topology, every element requires skills in order to be used – being selection from a catalog or creating a custom a solution following a known pattern. The course provides concepts, procedures and data as well as supporting analysis and decision techniques necessary to apply these common elements. Covered categories are structures, drives (belts, gears), shafts, couplings, seals, bearings, electric motors, springs and fasteners. Supporting concepts include analysis of stresses and deformations, stability, load factors, power and service life.
Elements are applied based on their specific properties and integrated in the (larger) design of a product. The student will be made familiar to common practices and understand why different variants of solutions exists and why and where these can be selected. Furthermore he or she is trained to determine various properties of a solution (analysis), as well as to create (and iterate) towards solutions satisfying design constraints.
The curriculum contains a number of design- and design related courses and activities. This Construction course uses design cases and exercises typical present in Industrial Design and extends the student’s knowledge and skills in the mechanical domain.
