Aims:
Production of Knowledge 202000086
- The student is able to describe the nature of knowledge being developed and used in the engineering domain and especially the way models are used in the field of Civil Engineering
- The student is able to reflect on the production and use of knowledge in relation to a specific case in the field of Civil Engineering
- The student is able to describe and recognize differences between research techniques common in the field of Civil Engineering in particular: experiment, observation, literature- and document study, model study, open interview. The student is able to assess the applicability of certain techniques in a particular research design
Proposal BSc-thesis CE 202000087
The student is able to write - under supervision - a project plan for a (practical) research project in the field of Civil Engineering. The plan includes:
a. a Conceptual Design, containing researchable questions and well defined operationalized concepts.
b. a Technical research design, containing appropriate Research Strateg(y)(ies), Procedures for gathering data and a Research Planning.
Content:
In module 1-8 of the CiT-programme students gained domain specific knowledge in the different subfields of Civil Engineering and applied this knowledge in projects using several design and research methods.
Production of Knowledge 202000086
In Production of Knowledge the focus will be on questions regarding knowledge production in the field of Civil Engineering. What is knowledge? How is knowledge generated and used and by whom? How may I generate knowledge myself?
Special attention is paid to the following aspects:
- The central role of models (both conceptual and mathematical) within the different subfields of Civil Engineering
- The role of actors within the production and dissemination of knowledge
- The production of knowledge in relation to time and space
Proposal BSc-thesis CE 202000087
In this course the focus is on Designing a research Project in the field of Civil Engineering, preparatory to and to be conducted in module 12, the BSc-Thesis of Civil Engineering. The course is meant to scaffold and foster the writing process towards a working and feasible Bsc-Thesis research plan.
The attention is directed towards writing a Project plan for a (practical) research project: Conceptual Design, Technical Research Design and Research Planning.
