Module description
Learning goals:
Professional Skills
After successful completion of this module component, the student is able to:
  • identify and analyse strong and weak qualities with use of a questionnaire and experiences from prior modules and illustrate these qualities with examples
  • make choices for the third year of his/her study using input from the personal analysis, a questionnaire on preferences for future employment and information on possible choices in the third year
  • write a letter of application using the above-mentioned analysis and information
  • prepare seriously for an application interview by a trial interview

Traffic flow dynamics
  • Knowledge: The student has knowledge of the basic concepts of traffic flow theory, including data measurement
  • Comprehension: The student is able understand and explain some of the basic phenomena in traffic flows. including data measurement
  • Application: The student is able to apply the concepts and phenomena as a basis for traffic management systems…
  • Analysis: The student is able to analyse the level of service of a traffic flow, based on measurements and/or simulation outcomes
  • Synthesis & evaluation: The student is able to analyse and compare different traffic flow situations

Simulation of Traffic Flows
  • Knowledge: The student has knowledge of all objects in a traffic flow simulation, e.g., infrastructure, demand, traffic control, vehicle-driver-units
  • Comprehension: The student is able to explain the functioning of these objects.
  • Application: The student is able to model and interpret a simple traffic situation and transfer it to a traffic flow simulation experiment.
  • Analysis: The student is able to identify the impact of infrastructure, demand and control in a simple traffic flow simulation experiment.
  • Synthesis: The student is able to identify the causal relations in an experiment and develop solutions to improve the traffic situation.

Simulation and Heuristics
After successful completion of this module component, the student is able to:
  • describe the different types of simulation, their applicability, and how-to setup a simulation study.
  • understand the core principles of discrete event simulation (e.g., the event controller, random numbers, and warm-up period);
  • define input for a simulation model (e.g., different statistical distributions) and design experiments (selection of the type of simulation, warm-up period, replications, combination of experimental factors, ranges, performance indicators, etc.).
  • explain the concepts of (i) construction and improvement heuristics and (ii) local search heuristics.

Project on simulation and heuristics
After successful completion of this module component, the student is able to:
  • design and implement a conceptual simulation model in a simulation environment, according to the project specifications.
  • perform simulation experiments, interpret the outcomes of the simulation, and formulate recommendations that are useful for the problem owner.
  • apply construction and improvement heuristics and local search heuristics to solve relatively simple problems.

Multidisciplinary project
After successful completion of this module component, the student is able to:
  • communicate and collaborate with students from different educational backgrounds.
  • select appropriate modelling tools (from the set of tools provided in this module) for a large real-life problem and use them to model and solve the problem.
  • interpret the outcomes of the before mentioned tools and formulate practical recommendations for system improvement.
  • inform and convince the problem owner by means of a report and presentation.
Content description:
This module consists of 6 different components, distributed over three blocks.
  • Block 1 is about traffic flows and simulation modelling of such flows.  In the component (or course) on Traffic Flow Dynamics students learn about the behaviour of traffic flow from theory, and also by simulation of traffic flows in the tutorials. Macroscopic flow characteristics as speed, flow and density, microscopic characteristics as speeds and headways play an important role as well as traffic flow phenomena as queuing, shockwaves, and delays. As a prerequisite for simulation, the goal is to learn about the principles of a so-called micro-simulation to be able to conduct a simulation study focused on traffic operations. In the Project Simulation of Traffic Flows students learn to model real-world traffic situations, determine the traffic operations under different demand and control scenario’s using a state-of-the-art traffic simulation software tool. Further in Block 1 the course on Professional Skills consists of workshops and assignments. During the first workshop the student uses a questionnaire and experiences from prior modules to identify strong and weak qualities. The student will illustrate this using (STAR) examples. On the basis of this analysis the student defines learning goals (assignment 1). In a second workshop the student makes an inventory of preferences for future working environments. Information on finding a bachelor thesis assignment is given. Based on this information the student writes a CV and an application letter (assignment 2). In a third workshop the CV and application letter are evaluated. Application interviews are rehearsed.
  • Block 2 is about Simulation and Heuristics. In the first component (course) in this block students learn how to perform a simulation study and learn basic heuristic approaches for routing and scheduling. Regarding simulation, the goal is to learn about the principles of discrete event stochastic simulation to be able to conduct a simulation study focused on the improvement of business processes. Regarding heuristics, the goal is to learn how to apply priority rules and sampling to construct solutions, and how to apply local search to improve solutions. The second component (course) in this block is about an actual project on simulation and heuristics. Here students learn how to use computer simulation to gain insight into stochastic systems that are too complex to analyse via other means. Students need to analyse the system to be simulated, implement a model into discrete-event simulation software, implement heuristics for planning and scheduling and priority rules, and perform a proper statistical analysis in order to draw conclusions about the performance of the system.
  • Block 3 is about the Multidisciplinary Project, where students work together in a relatively large project group with students from various educational backgrounds. For a complex stochastic problem, students learn to select the appropriate techniques (as considered in all previous components of this module for all involved study programs), to use those to analyse the problem and to interpret the results, and to formulate recommendations to solve the problem.
