After finishing the module, students will be able to:
  • Design a civil engineering infrastructure, or a component, that is stable from a structural engineering point of view, while meeting a set of pre-defined objectives, functions and requirements;
  • Evaluate how the energy needs of civil engineering infrastructure can be met by means of more sustainable energy sources;
  • Evaluate the potential environmental impact and the life cycle costs of construction materials;
  • Explain how social aspects can be considered in the development of port areas;
  • Use multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods to address the trade-offs inherent to the multidimensional nature of a sustainable civil engineering infrastructure;
  • Communicate the assignments output in a clear, structured and convincingly way to a broad audience composed by both experts and non-experts.
Module 6 covers various technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of civil engineering. The final product of this module is the design of a smart bridge, which will be the replacement for the MX3D bridge in Amsterdam. This design is made against the need for sustainable development, including the need to make efficient use of raw materials and energy sources, to reduce potential environmental impacts and costs within the context of a responsible strategy for the development of smart cities. The bridge also has to be ‘smart’. It has to inform its owners and residents of its conditions (health) via sensing systems and inform future design of smart and sustainable cities.
In the first two weeks of the module, students will become familiar with their projects and with sustainable civil engineering. From the first week of the module, students (in duos) will work on an assignment involving all courses related to the project: (i) design strategy & evaluation, (ii) structural design, (iii) environmental impact and life cycle costs of materials, (iv) social sustainability and (v) analysis of energy flows and energy technologies. In week six student will submit their report on Economic and environmental sustainability. Also working in duos, students need to demonstrate how their final projects fit the overall vision and values of the bridge by taking into account insights and findings from the other four components of the module. The underlying goal is that students will be able to integrate all the subjects into the design of a sustainable solution that takes into account all the facets. This exercise will foster the students’ higher level of thinking. The submission of the final report is in week nine. In the last week of Module 6, students will present their final solutions in an electronic poster or presentation
