Cursusdoelen
At the end of the module the student ….
  • can operationalize a risk-based approach in quantitative assessment, covering extreme value statistics, hydraulics, probabilistic descriptions of infrastructure failure, and spatial inundation and damage estimation,
  • can design and implement mathematical simulation models in a structured manner, and apply them to generate quantitative statements, including statements on accuracy,
  • can organize an educational session and reflect on it.
Inhoud
This is a part of Module 5, Safety and Risk in Deltas of the Bachelor Civil Engineering. See here for the complete description of this module.

A risk approach for flood safety calls for an integrated assessment with an ample coverage of technical civil engineering aspects. Floods of different magnitudes are addressed, where floods can be caused by different mechanical failure mechanisms, and different impacts are considered.
The project links to the other courses in the module by
  • using Fluid Mechanics 2 and extreme event statistics from Water Management to describe conditions that may trigger floods, and their frequency of occurrence,
  • using Soil Mechanics to estimate dike failure probabilities for high flow conditions,
  • using water balance approaches and damage functions from Water Management to estimate inundations and their impact,
  • using additional programming features of Python.
The information generated is integrated in a concise set of indicators for flood risk. This flood risk assessment is set up in a structured manner, following a stepwise modelling approach from literature, resulting in a modular model implemented in matlab. The assessment is designed in a manner that allows the analysis of civil engineering interventions in the river profile, in the dike cross-section, and in the inundating hinterland. Some example interventions are implemented to estimate their effect on flood risk, and the assessment model is critically evaluated.
During the course, students are involved in self-organising exchange sessions.
