After completing this course, the student should be able:

  1. Using and describing appropriate transport studies terminology;
  2. Gaining insight into the factors that account for developments in traffic and transport and being able to address traffic and transport issues from various different perspectives (economy, psychology, geography);
  3. Tracing back traffic-related issues to the interaction between traffic demand and supply;
  4. Implementing a 4-step macroscopic traffic model and understanding the influence of corresponding model coefficients;
  5. Using relevant indicators to describe the performance of the traffic system;
  6. Quantitatively analyzing, interpreting and evaluating traffic data and model results;
Inhoud

The theory part of the course is taught alongside the project and offers an overview of transport planning and design. The theory part consists of the following 3 components:
  • Traffic and infrastructure: From various perspectives (e.g. economic, psychological and geographic), concepts and theories are introduced that deal with traffic, transportation, and the necessary infrastructure.
  • Traffic demand model: This component deals with models for estimating the demand for transport. The emphasis will be on the 4-step model, in which the four steps – trip generation, trip distribution, transport mode and route choice & assignment – are in the traffic model used during the project.
  • Data analysis: An introduction of techniques and concepts that are essential for analysing traffic data and interpreting the results.
The above theoretical components together comprise 5 ECTS credits in total, more-or-less evenly distributed between the components. The standard OER pass/fail rules apply. There are (individual) assignments during workshops. A passing grade for at least one of these workshops is needed to pass the final exam.
