Module 3, Traffic and Transport, consists of several module parts, every part has its own learning objectives. The Module overview is given below:

  Name module element EC Code
1 Theory Traffic & Transport 5 202000057
2 Linear Algebra 3 202001204
3 Project Traffic & Transport 7 202000058
Modulebeschrijving
Learning goals:
  1. Using and describing appropriate transport studies terminology;
  2. Gaining insight into the factors that account for developments in traffic and transport and being able to address traffic and transport issues from various different perspectives (economy, psychology, geography).
  3. Tracing back traffic-related issues to the interaction between traffic demand and supply;
  4. Implementing a 4-step macroscopic traffic model and understanding the influence of corresponding model coefficients;
  5. Implementation of measures in a macroscopic traffic model and evaluation of the associated effects;
  6. Using relevant indicators to describe the performance of the traffic system;
  7. Quantitatively analyzing, interpreting and evaluating traffic data and model results;
  8. Implementing a functional design for a relatively straightforward traffic application;
  9. Recognizing and determining linear subspaces from vectors, functions, polynomials and matrices.
Content description:

In this module basic theory from traffic engineering is used for the project, which is the binding element of the module. For the project you will act as a consultancy bureau, set out to advise the municipality about what in your eyes is the best solution to a specific transportation problem. The objective is to develop a new urban area. The project will involve a major modification towards CO2-neutral transportation, while maintaining accessibility and reinforcing the economic structure. To describe and understand the transport system, you will use accessibility measures and a traffic model. The solutions and measures proposed by the consultancy bureau will be included in this model to predict traffic flows in case the proposed measures would be implemented. Furthermore, techniques relating to transport planning and policy will be used to assess whether the chosen measures will be compliant with the specific policy objectives. The project will be concluded with a presentation of the proof of concept. An explanatory memorandum (technical report) will elaborate on the analysis, the developed concepts and the impact on car use, accessibility and the economic structure of the new area.

The standard OER pass/fail rules apply to Module 3. The module is based on three components: Theory Traffic and Transport (33%),  Project Traffic and Transport (47%), and Linear Algebra (20%: see Mathematics arrangement).
