Modulebeschrijving
The aim of Module 1 is to introduce students to the basics of the Civil Engineering field and to develop an overall understanding of what it means to design Civil Engineering infrastructure. This module consists of an integrated design project (Project Civil Engineering Design) and three theoretical courses: Mathematics (Introduction to Mathematics and Calculus 1A), Structural Mechanics 1 and Fundamentals of Civil Engineering. Within these courses, students will learn how to design a structural system of beams and trusses, calculate loading and internal forces, classify and compare the behaviour of the most commonly used construction materials (concrete, asphalt and steel), plan and design (urban) traffic and water management solutions, and get acquainted with basic functional requirements for infrastructure projects. This technical knowledge will be applied in the design project, reinforcing the content knowledge of the courses and developing students’ understanding of a typical Civil Engineering project. In this design project students will conduct an integrated design process for a multi-disciplinary Civil Engineering design problem in an urban context. Through the project, students will also obtain basic skills in project planning, project design & management, professional report writing & presenting, peer review, teamwork, personal development and study skills.

The Intended Learning Outcomes of Module 1 contribute to the following final qualifications of the Civil Engineering Bachelor’s program:
  1. Competent in one or more scientific disciplines: The student obtains fundamental knowledge of the Civil Engineering subfields of Structural Mechanics, Construction Materials, Road Design and Water Management. This also includes introductory Mathematics and basic Calculus.
  2. Competent in doing research: This competency is not covered in Module 1.
  3. Competent in designing: The student is able to conduct an integrated design process (combining the basics of Structural Mechanics, Construction Materials, Road Design and Water Management) for a multi-disciplinary Civil Engineering design problem in an urban context. The student is able to design a realistic and feasible solution whilst balancing requirements, technical possibilities and stakeholders’ perspectives.
  4. A scientific approach: The student makes design choices using relevant current technical specifications and norms, and uses solid arguments to defend design choices. The student reflects on their work and is able to take up feedback from peers and supervisors.
  5. Basic intellectual skills: The student acquires basic study skills and is able to work on individual assignments and group projects with limited supervision. The student can analyse a multi-disciplinary Civil Engineering design problem and systematically work towards a design solution.
  6. Competent in cooperating and communicating: The student is able to work with an international group of peers and takes responsibility as a group member. The student acquires basic skills in project planning, project design & management, professional report writing & presenting, peer review and teamwork.
  7. Takes account of the temporal and societal context: The student recognizes the complexity of Civil Engineering projects and understands the roles and responsibilities of public clients and contractors in these projects. The student is able to position a Civil Engineering design problem in its societal context and can incorporate, and compromise between, different stakeholders’ perspectives in a design solution.
