Content Project 3
PROJECT 1 & ACADEMIC SKILLS 3: MAINTENANCE is the third course of the PROJECT AND ACADEMIC SKILLS learning line. 
The project combines manufacturing of components with their operational life. Design for Operational Life takes Design for Production a step further. Elements of consideration are then how the product wears or deteriorates and thus concepts like failure modes and mechanisms are touched upon. The design of products for maintainability links strongly with the course Manufacturing, a plastic components will need to be redesigned to improve the maintainability of the product. Measuring the amount of functional degradation (wear, deterioration) over time, with integrated sensors, is referred to as monitoring. Doing so allows to follow the change of operational functionality of a system and predict, in a basic manner, when maintenance is due. This part of the project links strongly with Dynamics, as vibrations are considered as one of the prime sources of information on the state of a system: worn components such as cutting blades or bearings (link to Tribology and Manufacturing 2) will induce an increase in vibration levels, as will failures such as loose connections or broken support parts. In this part of the project, a condition monitoring system, in terms of type and location of sensor and in terms of analysis method needs to be designed. The third part of the project links to Signal Analysis: the designed monitoring system must be implemented in a real system and the measurement data must be acquired and processed to extract the condition from the measured data. Basic knowledge of signal processing will be covered.
Content Academic Skills
In this semester students learn to write and present project content in a structured and concise way, they will learn to update themselves about the work of other team members and intervene if necessary and they will learn to formulate an information question and find relevant sources based on the question.
Grading combined project and skills
Oral and written communication
As a final result of the project, the students need to hand in a conference paper. This paper is assessed by the project staff and tutor for comprehensibility, structure and readability according to a rubric. The group grade for this report will be part of the final grade of the project. During the project, the students will give a pitch at the milestone meeting and at the final presentation. Based on a discussion with the student, the resulting grade will be part of the semester 3 academic skills grade. If a grade is below 5.5, the students have to do a retake organized and assessed by the skills staff.
Teamwork and project coordination skills
During the project, the members of a project team will be assigned to various expert roles. Each expert is able to cover/solve certain parts of the project. In the project exam, students from different expert roles and different project teams will question each other. The project staff will assess the extend to which a student is informed about the work done by other team members using the project exam rubric. If the grade is below 5.5, the student needs to do an additional assignment, organized an assessed by the academic skills team/project staff. At the end of the project, the students will review their capabilities regarding planning skills. In a written report, each project team will describe the planning and interventions done to obtain the final result. This report has to be handed in and is mandatory to obtain the academic skills grade.
Information and research skills
To get acquainted with the search for scientific information, the students have to search scientific papers to define the format of their paper, method and results. The students need to submit their conference paper together with a (small) search report. Handing in this report is required to obtain the academic skills credits.
In the end of semester 3, the academic skills grade will consist of
  • A grade for the project pitch
  • A grade for the teamwork skills: up to date about team members work
  • Handing in the reflection to planning assignment
  • Handing in the search report
