Aims
The learning outcomes are:

  • Know the physical principle of various sensors and their use in measurement techniques to achieve suitable measurements of signals.
  • Know the implication of noise in a measurement, including;
    • Noise characterisation – distribution functions;
    • Sources of noise and their related characteristics;
    • Measurement techniques to reduce the effect of noise.

  • Know and apply various measurement techniques to get the best signal out of your sys- tem.
  • Know and apply the technique of lock-in in various situations.
  • In practical sense;
    • Design and set-up a detector circuit for a measurement;
    • Using standard equipment – using their limitations – in a measurement process;
    • Interfacing a detector circuit to a computer: regular pc, as well as a nano-computer, like Arduino, Raspberry Pi or other;
Measure small signals in a noisy environment using the lock-in technique applied in a detector circuit with nano-computer set-up.
Content
The course treats the physical and practical characteristics of detection of signals. Main focus will be on small signals. A significant part of the course will be focussed on detection techniques and characterisation and handling of noise. Noise characterisation, related to sources and noise reduction related to measurement techniques will be treated.
In practical sense, detectors will be interfaced to a DAC-PC and/or a micro-controller via a small electronic circuit. In the practicals noise reduction will be a major part too.
