 body { font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial } table { font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial } The main objective is to understand how electric machines work, converting electrical power to mechanical power, and vice versa.  Specific learning goals are: (1) to understand how Maxwellâ€™s equations are applied in magnetic circuits; (2) to solve simple magnetic circuits relevant to electrical machine structures; (3) to know the structure and operation of the different types of electrical machines; (4) to describe how different types of electrical machines are used in drive systems; (5) to be able to derive equations describing the steady-state performance of these machines; (6) to solve analytic problems in simple applications.

Different types of mechanical loads are discussed. Maxwell's equations are applied to magnetic circuits including permanent magnets. DC machines, induction machines, synchronous machines, switched reluctance machines, brushless DC machines and single-phase machines are discussed with the power electronic converters used to drive them.
