After this course, the student is able to:
- Describe how turbulence relates to mean flow, roughness and sediment transport
- Name the different types of bedforms occurring in rivers, their characteristics and how they interact with the flow
- Quantify sediment concentration and transport in rivers
- Describe and quantify local scour around structures
- Critically evaluate the validity of numerical models and experimental results to describe mean flow, turbulence and sediment dynamics

In this course students learn how physical processes affect the hydrodynamic and morphological behavior of rivers and how this affects the management of rivers. Using mathematical descriptions of the physical processes students learn to critically evaluate the results of laboratory and field experiments and the outcome of numerical models.
