In terms of the group work process, students will demonstrate that they are able to:
- Examine a multidisciplinary and complex research challenge of their own definition by applying knowledge and insights acquired in the study programme.
- Design or create a potential solution or solutions to the research challenge.
- Report on and present the outcomes of their group work activities according to academic standards.
- Focus on a relevant challenge in society, scope the topic into a research project, conduct the research, report and present findings (students select and describe the challenge themselves, consent needed from supervisors).
- Lead the research process from proposal to completed report within time constraints, while working in a multi-disciplinary, multicultural team.
- Apply the acquired social, communication and research skills in a complex research project.
- Work in a research team according to a (diversity of) team role(s).
The case study period takes Energy management at the organisational, local, national, or regional level as its focus and follows a “Challenge-based Learning” philosophy. Students select subjects based on relevant requests by actual or diffuse societal actors (e.g., the City of Leeuwarden, regional authorities or associations, companies, local energy cooperatives, or DSOs). In groups they develop a research strategy to tackle the challenge and execute this strategy within the constraints of the module.
The Case study period course develops the concepts and skills acquired during the preceding courses in particular the Energy Management as well as drawing on other courses. The case study period involves either identifying or responding to a given problem by advising about or designing a solution for the situation based on data gathering through various means such as a literature search, statistics, document analysis and interviews, and providing an analysis of the situation and identifying various options.
