Aims
The student should be able to decide which type of model to use for a specific problem and should be able to evaluate the reliability of model results. Furthermore, the student should be able to analyze model results using Pyhton. At the end of the course,  the students are able to:
  • select the important physical processes to be included in the model
  • evaluate model performance based on calibration and validation results
  • perform a sensitivity analysis with which you can determine the influence of input parameters on model results
  • categorize between different types of surrogate models
  • justify your modelling choices both orally and in text

Content
In this course, different types of hydraulic models will be described. An overview of model software used in industry will be presented as well as their benefits and drawbacks. The students will learn to decide which type of model to use for a specific problem. The first part of the course consist of theoretical background of model choices: e.g. 1D-2D-3D, calibration procedure, curvilinear/triangular grids and an introduction into surrogate modelling. In the second part, the students will work on an consultancy project.  They learn to set up a hydraulic model using the modelling software Delft3D. A final symposium is given in which each group has to present and evaluate their model results.
