Cursusdoelen
The goal of this course is to develop a 10 to 15 minutes documentary (i.e. film) providing a real-world perspective on your principles as a future ITech worker. This documentary is a culmination of the development of a creative, visual and personal concept to generate a new vision on a topic related to your motivation for your master study: For what purpose do you want to apply your knowledge? Which role do you want to have?

Visual reflection and a changed perspective through storytelling are the tools to develop this concept.

The topic is a ‘conflict’ related to a challenge in the real world within the context of your future role: something about this context that gets your special attention. The documentary will be a visual reflection on this conflict that will be resolved in this film. The conflict is the driving force to gain insight into the underlying problem. Resolving this conflict is not the same as resolving the underlying problem. Therefore, the documentary ends with the broadening of a vision, but not necessarily with a solution to the problem.

In this context, you learn to
  1. Define a theme of personal interest related to your principles as a future ITech worker; ILO 1, ILO 2
  2. Research the real-world perspective (e.g. politics, psychological, environmental/sustainability, social, economic, philosophical/ethical) on your theme with existing documentaries, other media, direct information from experts and literature; ILO 7 ILO 8 ILO 9 ILO 10 ILO 11
  3. Select experts and sources who reflect on a new aspect of the theme and the world perspective and use, combine and synthesize this information in such a way that a new vision on the topic is created; ILO 7 ILO 9 ILO 10 ILO 11
  4. Recognize documentary types and choose a suitable type to your theme; ILO 6 ILO 7 ILO 9 ILO 10 ILO 11
  5. Develop a personal and new visual concept -a film plan- for the real-world perspective of your theme;; ILO 6, ILO 7 ILO 9
  6. Work with an edit programme and create a documentary on your own theme; ILO 6, ILO 7 ILO 9
  7. Develop promotion material for your own documentary; ILO 6, ILO 10
  8. Have insight in conditions that promote your own working process and are able to influence these conditions;

The motivation for their master study will be the basis for the filmplan: why did you choose for this master study? For what purpose do you want to apply your knowledge? Which role do you want to have?
On the basis of this motivation you will start a diverging research for representative themes for your film. You will research media, specifically documentaries, to get an idea about the scopes of technical innovations (social, economic, political, philosophical/ethical, psychological, sustainable).
Once you have chosen your theme, you will search for a connection to technology by searching for a technology related example within your theme.

The main focus of the course is to generate new information, the development of a creative, visual concept and a new vision on the topic. Therefor the student will investigate the newest information about their topic thoroughly, with emphasis on the depth of research.
The students will analyse the formats of documentaries, write a film plan for their own documentary, select expert(s) to be interviewed, record these interviews, if necessary search for relevant found footage and compose a documentary about a real-world perspective on their own theme.
At the end of the course there will be a public screening of all documentaries. In special cases, on request of the student, the lecturers can decide that the screening will be private.

Visual reflection and a changed perspective through storytelling will generate a broad, new and profound view. The improvement of technical skills in camera use and editing are of minor importance.
