Cursusdoelen
After completion of the course the student shall
  • acquire a physical and mathematical understanding of the basic properties of MIMO multipath wireless channels in terms of their temporal, spatial and spectral properties and be able of applying them to the analyzing and modeling of multiple antenna systems,
  • obtain a relevant knowledge and understanding of the design and performance analysis of advanced multiple antenna systems with application to the latest wireless systems,
  • understand different transmission and reception schemes and algorithms and their advantages and relative performance gains over various types of MIMO channels,
  • become familiar with and be able to find and use relevant technical literature to solve problems pertaining the design and analysis of multiple antenna systems from Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) systems to Massive MIMO systems,be able to relate the principles and concepts learned to the latest standardization activities and 5G.

Inhoud
This course covers the fundamentals of advanced multiple antenna systems exploiting diverse degrees of freedom of the wireless propagation channel with focus on their applications to 3G-5G wireless systems. Fundamental concepts pertaining the multi-dimensional, e.g., over frequency, time, space, polarization, etc., characterization of Multiple-Input Multiple Output (MIMO) propagation channels will be provided. Both, the so-called pure Line-Of-sight (LOS) channels as well as multipath channels will be addressed. Features of fixed and mobile multiple antenna systems will be covered too. Special attention will be given to the analysis of diversity schemes, spatial multiplexing, space-time coding and beamforming/precoding algorithms and their performance in single antenna (SISO) systems to Massive MIMO systems in different wireless propagation channels. Various transmitter and receiver structures will be explained with emphasis on the implementation of various signal processing algorithms, e.g., Zero-Forcing and Maximum Ratio transmission and reception.

As the course has a wide coverage, no single book can cover all topics. However, the book “Practical Guide to MIMO Radio Channel: with MATLAB Examples” is required as the course will be based heavily on its material. The course will be also based on lecture notes/slides. The non-comprehensive list of suitable text books can be consulted.

Assessment
In addition to solving correctly 50% or more of the Home Assignments you are required to give a presentation/lecture in order to PASS the course. The final grade will be based on an oral examination.
