Aims
After this course, the student
  • Knows the different types of machines involved in infrastructure maintenance operations;
  • Understands how to use the different types of machines;
  • Understands safety and technical limitations of the machines;
  • Analyses the request work operations;
  • Applies the different machines in the right context and with the proper planning schedule and critically evaluates the results.
Content
The course will offer to the student the opportunity to acquire knowledge on the available machines for maintaining infrastructures. The first part of the course will  give an insight on the machines and technologies available and how they can be deployed in operations under which limitations.
 
The second part of the course will focus on the process of deploying these machines. Planning and operations underlining the importance of using correctly the machines. Adopting serious game sessions and excursions, the course will let the students experience how to manage maintenance operations on complex infrastructures reducing the disturbance for the users.
 
The main topics covered in this course are:
  • Machine and technology: Machines involved in infrastructures maintenance operations (excavators, dumpers & trucks, loaders, cranes, tamping machines for railways):
    • Main technical features (air compress energy, oil dynamic energy, pumps, etc…);
    • Working capabilities (working cycles, limitations etc...);
    • European Legislation on Machinery and Safety (2006/42CE);
  • Process: Organizing maintenance activities on infrastructures:
    • Preparation of the site;
    • Operations;
    • Accidents and fatalities;
This course will be assessed by means of assignments and a final written exam.
