The main objective of the course Preparation MSc-thesis project is to – independently1) – produce a research or design plan for his/her MSc-thesis project, based on state-of-the-art scientific knowledge of the sub-field and acquire additional knowledge to prepare for the MSc-thesis project. The MSc-thesis project is a large2) individual research or design project in one of the sub-fields of Civil Engineering and Management.
- With ‘independently’ we mean: the student acts as the project leader for producing this research or design plan with guidance from his/her supervisor(s). The amount of guidance needed will be reflected in the grading of the course.
- With ‘large’ we mean one coherent project of 30 EC that requires about 21 full-time working weeks, i.e. about half a year of work.

Course Description
Background and context:
Just before the master thesis the student has to do a final course: Preparation master thesis. The course Preparation master thesis is individual and tailormade.
The student will establish the contents, examination mode(s) and planning together with the supervisor of his thesis.
Course content:
Based on a meeting with the thesis supervisor, the student will make a plan that contains the following information: outline of the thesis subject, knowledge to be gained (literature, software, methodology), examination mode(s) and planning.
Based on this plan the student will deliver the following products:
- Research plan
- Proof of sufficient prior knowledge based on examination mode(s)
The supervisor is responsible for appointing the thesis committee. The supervisor will examine the prior knowledge. The entire thesis committee has to give approval to the research plan.
