After this course, the student is able to:
  • analyze preconditions for the application of supply chain management and purchasing concepts from other industries into the construction supply chain;
  • create, elaborate and choose solutions for supply chain and purchasing management problems in a structured way;
  • explain the role of BIM, IoT, RFID and ERP in integrating the different stages of the construction supply chain;
  • evaluate and explain the impact of the digitalization of construction supply chains;
  • evaluate existing practices of construction supply chain management and purchasing.
The focus of this course is the opportunities for the application of digitalization and supply chain management concepts from other industries to construction, such as for the improvement of construction supply chain management, and materials transport and distribution between manufacturers and construction sites. Next to that, this course will focus on digitalization- , supply chain- , and purchasing management issues in the relation between construction firms and their suppliers. Attention will be devoted to the role of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), RFID and ERP in improving construction supply chain management.
The main topics in this course are:
  • portfolio management in construction supply chains;
  • physical distribution in construction;
  • reversed logistics in construction supply chains;
  • BIM maturity in construction;
  • impact of BIM, Internet of Things, RFID and ERP on construction supply chains;
  • buyer-supplier relations in construction supply chains.
The content of the course touch on the increasing relevance of clients and construction firms to professionalize their buyer-supplier relationships supported by digital technologies. The course requires students to critically analyze recent developments by executing a case study in construction practice. To enable students to do this, theory behind supply chain management and digitalization is addressed in 5 lectures, after which students will do a research project (in groups) in the construction practice using real-life cases.
The course is assessed by means of an individual literature exam (50%) and a group assignment (50%). To pass this course, you need to obtain at least a 5.5 on both parts.
