Aims
At the end of this course, students are able to:
  • Distinguish the dominant physical processes based on the 1D shallow water equations, given a certain river flow situation;
  • Estimate on what spatial and temporal scales flow and morphology respond to human induced or natural changes of a river;
  • Quantify the short term and long term effects of changes to initial and boundary conditions of river systems
  • Distinguish advective and diffusive morphodynamic behaviour
  • Describe the physical mechanisms that control flood waves

Content
In this course students learn how rivers react to changes in the initial and boundary conditions caused by either human interference or natural changes. Through the use of mathematical models and formulations students learn to predict and explain the behavior of rivers in terms of the underlying physical processes.
