  • Discuss, present scientific knowledge and defend it
In the course Morphology three topics are discussed that have a relation with morphology of rivers, estuaries, coasts and seas. Physics and mathematics play an important role herein. Because understanding and predicting morphology is often necessary to support control, the link with practice often comes into play. An example is the wave damping due to mangroves or wetlands, maintaining the coast line, controlling pipe lines in a dynamic seabed with sand waves. By means of recent scientific papers these topics are studied; these papers are presented by students and the topic is discussed using associated assignments.
The main topics which are covered in this course are:
  1. Offshore sand banks (pipelines, navigation and sand mining),
  2. River and estuarine dunes (flood protection measures, navigation).
  3. Coastal protection by wetlands and mangroves
These topics are tested by means of a written test, the presention of an existing scientific paper on a topic in morphology, and the student’s contribution to the discussion in-class.
