Cursusdoelen
At the end of the course the student:
  • Has knowledge of sources and effects of pollutants;
  • Understands the different physical and bio-chemical processes involved in pollutant transport (e.g., advection, diffusion, adsorption, degradation);
  • Is able to perform basic calculations on pollutant transport in lakes and rivers;
  • Has knowledge of measures to improve water quality;
  • Is able to apply the knowledge in a case

Inhoud
Water quality is one of the main issues in water management, both in developed and developing countries. Impaired water quality has an adverse effect on ecology and human health. This course will cover different aspects of water quality. The sources and problems of various pollutants will be discussed. The physical and (bio)chemical processes that determine the fate and transport of the pollutants such as reactions, advection, diffusion, adsorption and degradation, will be described by mathematical equations. Some technical and non-technical measures to improve the water quality will be discussed. The theory will be applied in a case.

The main topics covered in this course are:
  • Specific water quality problems (related pollutants and sources)
  • Physical and (bio)chemical processes related to water quality
  • Mathematical description of fate and transport processes
  • Measures to improve water quality
 This course is assessed by means of a written exam and an assignment.

Is knowledge of programming skills necessary for this course? Please specify the skills / knowledge of which programme(s) is / are needed.
In the assignment programming skills may be useful but not necessary. Calculations can be performed in Excel as well.
