This module prepares the students for writing assignments typical for the MEEM programme. Students learn to distinguish between different types of writing (descriptive, analytical, critical and reflective) and types of writing composed for different audiences and purposes (e.g. writing for scientific or reporting purposes and persuasive writing). Students practice the ability to present scientific evidence and claims, to organize claims and counter-claims about scientific writing and to incorporate literature references. Furthermore, they practice writing for the purposes of critique and persuasion. The assignments include a memo, a short position paper, and an annotated bibliography. These assignments provide the building blocks necessary for completion of paper assignments and the thesis assignment by asking students to clearly present scientific evidence, express agreement or disagreement with it, and present own arguments and findings.
