Cursusdoelen
The student will gain a first (and representative) experience of working in an experimental (bio) soft matter research environment, and acquire a better appreciation of the translation from theory to experiment.
Intended Learning Objectives: after following the course, the student can i) perform basic experiments involving soft matter (biological) fluids, ii) explain the measurement principles, iii) analyze the results in the context of (soft- and biological matter physics) theory and iv) write short reports using the structure of a scientific paper
Inhoud
Soft and Biological Techniques is a lab course where the student gets hands-on experience with modern techniques used in the study of soft- and biological matter. Materials studied include surfactants, proteins and colloids. Typical behaviors such as diffusion, wetting and (supra)molecular interactions are studied with mostly optical and mechanical techniques. SBT is intimately connected to (and uses theory from) both the Soft and Biological Materials and Colloids and Interfaces courses in minor module TN-09.

Assessment
Per experiment, a grade will be given, based on the following criteria and weights:
         preparation (20%)
         performance in the lab (30%)
         written report (50%)

In calculating the final score, each experiment will have equal weight.
Voorkennis
Mandatory:
The students should have a basic experience in lab (and safety) skills, and know how to write a lab journal and report
