Aim:
The final project is carried out in one of the research laboratories of the cooperating faculties under supervision of a professor from one of the research groups participating in the MSc programme. A second supervisor is added from one of the other participating groups to support the multidisciplinary character of the program. Master’s theses in industry are possible at each location. The Master’s thesis project is primarily meant to allow the student to gain in-depth experience in research and/or design. Students learn to explore and formulate new research questions regarding sustainable energy technologies or related fundamental issues, recognising the pitfalls of exploring unknown territory and developing skills to circumvent these, while gaining an understanding that abstraction and simplification are important tools for success.

The student performs research in one of the specialised SET-related areas. During the Master’s thesis, a student proves his/her level of understanding and ability to carry out a scientific research or design project, using the acquired competences (knowledge/skills and attitude). The specific aims are to teach students to:
- Analyse and model sustainable energy problems at a conceptual and mathematical level.
- Analyse and solve sustainable energy-related questions using a methodological approach to requirement analysis, making specifications, designing concept solutions, implementation and in verification and documentation.
- Read and write scientific papers.
- Understand scientific and research methodologies that are of importance in the realm of sustainable energy technologies, gain knowledge of the relationship between science and technology and the procedures to disseminate scientific knowledge.
- Work in a multidisciplinary team, be able to acquire a basic understanding of other fields and know how to apply sustainable energy technology to these areas, which may be other engineering disciplines as well as social sciences.
- Understand recent scientific developments in the field of sustainable energy technology and in particular within the chosen specialisation.
- Participate in research by undertaking a Master’s thesis within one of the research groups working on sustainable energy technology within the faculties or within a company.
