At the end of the elective, you will:
- have a thorough understanding of the use of GIS, remote sensing and other geospatial technology to produce information about Complex Spatio-Temporal Systems;
- know how and in which cases to apply this technology;
- be aware of and able to use (software) tools to retrieve, generate, process, integrate, analyse and disseminate spatio-temporal data.

"During this semester you will work on understanding and mitigating real-world problems in complex spatio-temporal systems. Geo-Information Systems (or GIS for short) are important tools in dealing with the many parts and (sub)systems in such complex spatio-temporal systems. For that reason there is a “GIS intro” element in the project that everybody will follow, to get a basic understanding of Spatial Data & Geo-Information Science.
This 3 EC elective is for those who want to further specialise in this topic. There will be an Engineering focus on GIS software tools. This takes you through all stages of working with spatio-temporal data: Understanding the various sources (from satellite imagery to twitter feeds); ways to store these data and to model them; discovering and extracting information from the data (using machine learning and statistical techniques); and finally using dissemination and data visualization strategies to communicate your results to stakeholders.
