In an internship a student:
In the initial phase of the internship a student learns to:
- Acquires working experience at an academic level in a company or institute external to the University of Twente
- Applies academic knowledge and skills in a professional organisation
- Collaborates in a research project, product development project or service-oriented project
In the execution phase of the internship the student learns to:
- Analyse available projects within the preferred professional organisation
- Propose his/her contribution to a selected project in a concept work description
- Discuss and align the concept work description to the project’s requirements in collaboration with external and internal supervisors
- Propose a feasible design or research question in the work description
- Negotiate an approved internship work description
In the final phase of the internship the student learns to:
- Identify and plan tasks derived from the work description i.r.t. available resources
- Carry out a design process of an envisioned solution in a methodologically correct manner
- Carry out an efficiency and efficacy analysis of the envisioned solution in a methodologically correct manner
- Analyse their own ethical and professional responsibilities i.r.t. working in the organisation and collaboration with the organisation’s customers
- Apply and expand academic and technical skills in a professional organisation
- Apply and expand existing knowledge about topics in relation to the work description
- Find assistance from members of the organisation for specific details of the work
- Interact and communicate in a professional organization
- Write a scientific internship report that describes the executed work on an academic level
- Write a non-scientific internship report that describes the personal experiences of the internship period.
An internship gives students the possibility to gain working experiences in an external professional organisation under circumstances resembling those of the first professional job after graduation. Ideally the student (i.e., intern) is considered as a junior member of the hosting organisation.|
The student prepares a concept work description that contains the name of the preferred professional organisation, a proposal of his contribution to a (existing or new) project, and the proposal of a feasible design or research question.
Approval of this description by the external and internal supervisors initiates the planning of tasks, which are derived from the work description. During task execution the student applies and expands his knowledge and skills. He also interacts with relevant people from the professional organisation in order to realise the agreed upon contribution according to the defined plan. This contribution is the internship artefact (e.g. prototype system, conceptual design, service optimisation proposal), which must be subjected by the student to an efficiency and efficacy analysis. The student should execute tasks on time and in a methodologically correct manner.
The student concludes the internship by submitting two reports: a scientific report and a non-scientific report. The scientific report describes the executed work on an academic level, and the non-scientific report describes the personal experiences of the student i.r.t. the internship period.
The internship has a study load of 15 EC and comprises a period of 10 calendar weeks. Creative Technology students can perform an internship as part of their minor space (first semester of year 3).
