This course exists of two parts and is given by dr. Anne Dijkstra, dr. Miles MacLeod and guest lecturers. In the first part, broader aspects of the science-society relationship and what those mean for communication are considered. The second part focuses on responsible conduct – i.e. academic integrity – when doing research.|
Not all scientific and technological developments are fully accepted in society. Companies, governments and, for example, research institutes or universities have experienced this in the past. Therefore, when designing or applying innovations or technologies, such as nanotechnologies or human enhancement technologies, communication with citizens and other actors is essential. How should one communicate about research and innovation? Will informing publics suffice? Or, should every citizen become actively involved in science and technology? What role and responsibility do researchers have in this science-society relationship?
This part aims at obtaining broader knowledge and insight about communication processes in relation to research and innovation. Current insights in science communication and communication strategies will be analysed and students apply this knowledge to a visual communication product related to their own research project.
In the second part, academic integrity is introduced upon which an online module will be followed and completed with an assignment.
