Aims
The goal of the course is to provide a basic understanding of energy conversion technologies comprising state-of-the-art advanced  conversion technologies using fossil fuels and new emerging conversion technologies for sustainable energy.
After the course the student should be able to analyze and assess the performance of present and new energy conversion technologies, and he or she should be able to develop a basic design of an energy conversion system.

Content
The course will give an introduction on advanced conventional power generation and cogeneration plants, as well as alternative energy technologies. The topics that are included are:
  • Advanced power plants with high efficiencies and low environmental impact
  • Supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam power generation technologies
  • Steam turbines, gas turbines, organic Rankine and combined cycles
  • Oxyfuel combustion and CO2 capture
  • Fuel cells
  • Heat pumps for heating and cooling
  • Biomass, geothermal, solar, hydro and wind energy
