After completing this course, Master Students are expected to have demonstrated mastery of contemporary topics to either industrial purchasing or public/healthcare procurement and gain a basic understanding of the respective other topic (students take one of the two directions public/healthcare or industrial as their primary option). Students will have gained the ability to solve semi-structured problems, identifying, analysing and applying the contemporary state of knowledge. Students will be able to present the results of their analysis in a business presentation.

In detail: Students develop skills to analyse, assess, recombine and critically reflect on research studies in the purchasing and supply management field. Students will have gained understanding in public procurement and industrial purchasing. Analytical skills needed to identify and design solutions based on research are developed. The academic term paper prepares students for the master thesis, as well. Students will be able to systematically collect, assess and analyse information from all relevant sources using advanced means. Students will be able to have a thorough overview of the structure of research processes and be able to apply it to literature review. Students will be able to integrate existing knowledge and research results for designing, validating, and selecting solutions in relatively complex cases and be able to conduct a bibliographic search and know how to reference correctly. Students will be able to analyse qualitative and quantitative data and interpret findings related to the research question/problem statement and, finally, prepare a structured presentation in business style on a course topic to both specialist and non-specialist audiences; training in the McKinsey slide style of presentation
The Seminar Purchasing course has four goals: a) it provides lectures to students with a brief introduction into the particularities of public procurement and industrial purchasing b) gives deeper understanding of contemporary issues (e.g. innovation, sustainability, digitalisation) in either private or public / health care procurement (i.e. students have the choice between the public and the industrial variant of the course) and c) in its methodological approach the course contains elements of a seminar. Students prepare theory and literature reflecting research papers on the subject, which will also sharpen their research skills and d) present their findings to their peers in a closing mini-conference.

The first part of the course consists of a series of lectures. First, all students jointly follow an introduction into the particularities of public procurement (historical development of public procurement in various countries and jurisdictions, tender processes, administrative requirements and contracting) and particularities of industrial purchasing (including seizing innovations from and with suppliers, r&d / production interface, organizational requirements, contract particularities). In parallel, students jointly follow a methods introduction on writing term papers and on business presentations McKinsey style.
The second part of the course consists in students preparing a term paper on one of the topics covered, all revolving around different aspects of the main themes of the seminar. Students will prepare a mini-conference to present their findings to their peers. These literature research findings and the lectures are part of the final exam.

Term paper on a topic from the course chosen by the students, who work in groups, from a list provided: minimum requirement to pass is to score a ‘6’ (six) in both assessment parts).
The final individual papers are evaluated with the following criteria:
- Clear and complete framing / question of the problem studied, demonstration of the relevance of the phenomenon at hand
- Thorough application of formatting requirements
- Use of existing and up-to-date literature in a comprehensive manner
- Choice and application of theories to approach the research question
- Demonstration of the application of academic problem solving capabilities
- Quality of the conclusion and of the end-product
- Consistency and clarity of the text and the lay-out of the paper
