  • the ability to recognize and articulate philosophical and ethical aspects of research in applied mathematics.
Inhoud
Educational organization. Seminars and group assignments.
Students do assignments analyzing and discussing (about 6) exemplary cases in the development and meaning of practices of applied mathematics and the employment of mathematical models in societal context, on the basis of key figures (Von Neumann, Turing, Wiener, Tinbergen, Van Dantzig, Shannon, Nash) as well as living protagonists. In addition students will discuss aspects of social responsibility and scientific integrity on the basis of exemplars. Students are challenged to come up with their own questions and statements regarding their (future) practice.

Deliverables. Preparation of meetings through readings, presentations, and contributions to discussions; group report.
