After passing the course, the student can:
- Discuss and reflect on core themes from Embodied theory and their relevance for design. Specifically: distributed representation and -computation, socially situated practices, sensorimotor coupling
- Study and summarize relevant academic literature (papers, book chapters) in the area of Embodied Interaction, as part of research activities within a design-research project
- Apply creative generative techniques within a design process grounded in principles of embodied interaction (e.g. theatre enactment, tinkering/engaging with materials, transforming and reflecting on action-perception couplings)
- Translate insights from embodied interaction literature into consequences for the future design of/ a revisiting, reframing, of existing designs of, mixed physical-digital systems
- Use concrete design activities, designed artifacts, design projects to critically reflect on a relevant aspect of embodied theories and take up a position viz a viz the theory (propose and argue for a revisiting or refinement of the theoretical principle)
- Writing a research paper in the format of a submission to an academic (design-research) conference
Embodied Interaction is a new design-research field at the crossroads of Industrial Product Design (‘Smart Products’) and Interaction Design (Human-Media Interaction). It studies the interaction between humans and artifacts and does so ‘through’ design. It relates to recent technological trends, such as: augmented reality, tangible interaction, ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence, smart products, wearables, social robotics, personal health technology, and others. Embodied Interaction draws on various social- and cognitive theories, philosophy and design frameworks that explain interaction as being fundamentally embodied and situated. It asks how we may design of mixed physical- and digital interactive products that seamlessly integrate with people’s everyday life and experience.|
The course is an advised elective within the track Human Technology Relations at IDE but also welcomes IDE students from other tracks. The course is also highly relevant for students of Human Media Interaction (EWI) and for students in Social Science, Psychology or Philosophy with an interest in Human Technology Interaction and/or Science & Technology Studies. The course forms a thematic combination with the IDE course 'Design for Interaction' in the 4th quartile but both can be chosen separately.
The following concepts are introduced through lectures and various explorative (design) activities: Distributed Cognition, Situated Cognition, Ecological Perception, Phenomenology of Embodiment, Embodied metaphor, Embodied Interaction (Dourish), Tangible interaction, Embodied Sensemaking, Frogger design Framework, Interactive Materiality, Blended interaction, Ubiquitous computing.
Activities consist of lectures and several hands-on design workshops in the first six weeks, followed by an interim presentation by each student of his/her paper plan. The final three weeks are reserved for wring the paper.
