Reproduce the most important concepts (social psychological) theories and insights with regards to the psychology of crime
  • To reflect critically on different crime-related aspects: from determinants to interventions and from detection to treatment
  • To approach crime from different perspectives such as the authorities, the perpetrators, and victims and to analyse and interpret the dynamics between them
  • Understand how new technology influences crime and can aid dealing with crime-related processes
  • To transfer leading theories and concepts to practical cases and write practitioner’s oriented advisory reports.
In what way does this master’s course prepare students for the Psychology work field?
  • Many of the cases used in the interactive lectures and workshops include actual and recent cases from practice.
  • in the workshops students will be challenged to put theory into practice.
  • Psychologists with substantial experience in the law enforcement field will give input and provide feedback on cases and exercises.
  • State of the art lectures from front running scholars in the field will optimally prepare students for valuable contributions in practice.
Inhoud
In this course the focus lies with understanding the social psychological aspects of crime and dealing with crime. Example content includes:
  1. Personality and environmental factors that stimulate criminal and antisocial behaviour.
  2. Contemporary issues in the fields of risk assessment, human intelligence and cybercrime.
  3. The dynamics of effective interventions for “crime in action” such as hostage takings.
  4. The way in which psychological knowledge can contribute to effective prosecution of perpetrators, specifically with regard to police interviewing, deception detection and the dealing with witnesses and victims in the forensic process
  5. Recidivism and victim-offender mediation

Behavioral analysis and interpretation are reoccurring themes.

There will be lectures, interactive working sessions, and two assignments. The resulting papers are designed to illustrate how psychological knowledge can be applied within relevant workplaces (one practical advisory report and one critical scientific assessment). The course will be concluded with an exam consisting of a combination of open and closed questions.
