In this course, students acquire basic skills of the emerging field of nanophotonics and metamaterials. Nanophotonics deals with the behavior of light in nanostructured materials with features on the scale of the wavelength or less. To describe the properties of light in such materials, we start from the wave equation, and thoroughly study dispersion and light-matter interactions. We focus on metamaterials and photonic crystals. These materials are designed to allow for unusual kinds of light-matter interactions, previously thought to be impossible. This Nanophotonics course is strongly skills oriented. Theoretical concepts are supplemented with a number of lab practicals (with all health and laser safety of course), employing real (and expensive!) research equipment. Grading will be based on homework assignments (cooperation allowed) and reports of the experiments.
Inhoud
The following topics are treated:
  1. Light scattering: Diffraction (Babinet), Rayleigh and Mie theory and point scatterers.
  2. Dispersion: Effective medium theory, Kramers-Kronig relations.
  3. Random media: Light diffusion, Coherent backscattering, Anderson localization.
  4. Photonic band gap crystals: Optical Bragg diffraction, Bloch waves, Bandstructures, Local density of states, Photonic band gap cavities.
  5. Optical wavefront shaping: Optimization, Mesoscopics.
  6. Fabrication methods.
  7. Applications: Lighting, White LEDs, High-resolution imaging, Non-conventional microscopy.

There are take-home assignments on theory, and on the experiments (“practica”). While cooperation between students is encouraged, all assignments must be handed in individually. In some cases (e.g., if international experts are visiting or simultaneous relevant scientific meeting occurs) a poster presentation or the writing of a summary of a colloquium talk may substitute for conventional assignments.
