Aims
The student will have to prove that he/she meets the objective of the program, which means academic knowledge, understanding and skills in the domain of civil engineering and certain sub-domains of business administration and public administration at a level which qualifies the graduate for independent professional practice and research in civil engineering.
Content
The student will do an individual 6 months project in the field of civil/construction engineering. It can either be a research project or a systematic design (of a model, object or procedure). It is preferred that the assignment is executed externally at a company or an institution. The assignment can, however, also be executed internally at one of the departments of CiT, for example at a research project that contributes to a PhD dissertation.  The steps for the Master thesis project are as follows: First, about 6 months before the start of the project, the student should read the MSc-thesis Student Guide which is published on the program website and should think about a suitable Master Thesis project that fits his/her needs. Second, about 4 months before the start, the student should contact the coordinator, dr. ir. R.S. de Graaf to do an intake meeting and discuss the procedure and topics of the Master Thesis Project. During this meeting, potential master thesis projects will be discussed. Third, after the intake meeting, the student starts looking for a company and an assignment. When this succeeds, the student informs the coordinator by mail. The coordinator then assigns a suitable supervisor. Fourth, the student contacts the supervisor to discuss the content of the assignment more in-depth. Fifth, when the supervisor, the company and the student all agree on the assignment, then the student proceeds with the course Preparation master thesis, which is aimed at making a project plan and literature study for the master thesis project. In the same time, the supervisor appoints the thesis committee which consists of at least two members. Sixth, after the course Preparation master thesis has finished with sufficient result, the Master thesis project can really start. The student informs the coordinator R.S. de Graaf about this by email. The student is him/herself responsible for signing and managing contractual arrangements with the external company or institution. It is highly recommended to use the standard UT Agreement for Practical Training for external assignments. This standard contract can be downloaded from the UT website (www.utwente.nl/stage) or obtained from the coordinator R.S. de Graaf. The language for the Master Thesis is UK English.

Assumed previous knowledge
The student must have finished the Preparation Master Thesis Course (5 ECTS) and at least 75 EC of his/her MSC-program before he/she can start with the Master Thesis.
