The learning objectives of the Master assignment are extensively defined in the BME Master OER. After completion of the Master assignment the student will be able to:
1. Perform Biomedical Engineering research at MSc level;
- is a specialist in a defined field of Biomedical Engineering
- has the knowledge and the skills for performing research independently (problem analysis, design a theoretical and experimental approach, can execute experiments, analyse and discuss results)
2. Co-operate and communicate with specialists in the field and other stakeholders;
- can write a scientific report in English
- can present and discuss her/his research for a group of peers
- integrate insights in the medical and the social context into her/his scientific work.

The individual master assignment is the completion of the Master programme. The central theme is to learn and subsequently demonstrate the ability to define, perform and complete a research project independently.
The assignment is performed at the Biomedical Engineering research groups of the UT under supervision of a mentor and the responsibility of a Master Assignment Committee. Occasionally, the assignment can be (partially) conducted at an organization outside the UT. Prior approval of the Examination Committee BMT/BME must be obtained. The Master Assignment is concluded with a thesis and colloquium (both in English).
The student has to perform a substantial and moderately complex research or design project that meets scientific criteria. The student completes the assignment with a written report (Master thesis in English) and the Master colloquium. Besides a summary in English, a summary in Dutch must also be included. The latter is not a requirement for foreign students. English is preferred language for the colloquium, depending on the composition of the research group. This occurs in consultation with the Master's final project commission's chairperson.
