Cursusdoelen
After passing the course, the student can:
  • Design proposal: create a valid, detailed and challenging packaging design within the boundaries set by the corresponding product, materials, industry and client
  • Functional specification and testing: prepare, perform and evaluate a sensible analysis of the complete product/ packaging combination based on a sound functional specifications and appropriate analysis and testing methods.
  • Attune design to production processes: predict the interdependence between  design and  appropriate process conditions and translate into the packaging design
  • Sustainability: analyze the packaging design on important aspects of sustainability and give examples of possible points of improvement
  • Usability: analyze the packaging design on important aspects of usability and relate issues to active and intelligent packaging developments
  • Legislation: identify the consequences of the valid legislation for the packaging design and corresponding processes.
Inhoud
As the successor to the first Packaging Design & Management course (as thought in Q1), Packaging Design & Management 2 is strongly focused on bringing the theory to practice. Whereas in Packaging Design and Management the functions of packaging are the starting point to explore the field of packaging design, the starting point in Packaging Design and Management 2 is the briefing of a company.

In groups of 4-5 you work on a design proposal that suits the design brief. The learning goals are assessed via a report that focuses on the justification of the design proposal and via a presentation and discussion session

CONTENT
The course elaborates on the field of packaging and applies the acquired knowledge in assignments. If possible, excursions will be organized. During the course, students work on their main assignment, directly applying the topics of the lectures, workshops and company visits.
  • Elaborating the functions and functionalities of packaging by lectures and an assignment. The focus will be on trends like intelligent and active packaging.
  • Design methods are tools to reduce uncertainty during the design process. Insights will be given in tools like functional specifications by lectures and setting up tests. Mind mapping will also be executed.
  • Marketing and design and the shop as a societal experimental laboratory will be used to explore the way we choose our products and to show how design influences our buying behaviour.
  • Changing an existing packaging design is hard because filling levels and diameters are being defined by packaging lines and the distribution channel. Insight will be given and an assignment of plastic or glass packaging will be given. Together with the needed top-load the design problem will be deepened.
  • Small changes can cause big differences on filling lines. Aspects like overturning and friction and/or other aspects of packaging will be part of the focus.
  • Design rules and testing of the use functionality of packaging. A test will be executed with a designed packaging in combination with a visit to a testing institute.
