Cursusdoelen
After passing the course, the student can:
  • Requirement specification: apply the knowledge and understanding of the functions of the packaging regarding preservation/protection, distribution, usage and conveying information and legislation for a specific packaging design and align with the vulnerabilities of the corresponding product.
  • Design for marketing & graphics: identify the strategic functions of packaging and attune the packaging design to the marketing needs of the (end)user regarding design, usage and environment.
  • Design with packaging materials: apply the knowledge and understanding of the realisation process, characteristics and applications of the main packaging materials: glass, plastics, metal and paper/ cardboard to the design of packaging.
  • Filling procedure: schematically describe the processes involved in producing and filling the designed packaging.
  • Cost price: execute a simple estimation of packaging costs based on concepts of packaging design.
Inhoud
Packaging is much more than 'the box around the product". Packaging not only fulfils a lot of functions (ranging from "protecting" to "informing" and beyond), it also plays a vital role in the supply- and value chain of products. The function packaging plays in the purchase decision of customers, especially concerning supermarket products, is also an important aspect. Because of an aging society convenience and ease of use have become important issues. There is a clear trend towards concurrent development of product/packaging combinations. Together with aspects such as runability, efficiency on packaging lines and the ubiquitous sustainability makes the subject packaging even more multi-disciplinary. This, together with the enormous turnover in the packaging industry, makes packaging development an important focus for product development.
The course focuses on a number of specific topics and aspects of packaging and its development life cycle. It will cover both in-depth details of packaging, and also address the broader approach towards combined product/packaging development.
Attention is paid to packaging materials like plastics, carton and board, metals, glass and flexible materials like laminates. Moreover, attention is paid to the aspects that play a role in the packaging development chain, like cost, logistics, distribution, marketing, vulnerabilities of products, convenience and ease of use. To adequately address all these topics simultaneously, the packaging chain is used as a basis, employing different models to support the packaging developer in achieving synthesis between product development and packaging development.
The course gives theoretical introductions to the field of packaging, and applies the acquired knowledge in assignments. The more practical aspects of packaging and the packaging chain are studied in case studies and excursions to a number of companies.
During the course, you will work on one main assignment, directly applying the topics of the lectures, workshops and company visits.
