Aims
After this course the student will master both the essential theory and practice of Business Case Development and Business Case Management.

Content
In this course, the central topic is how to develop and use Business Cases to initiate, monitor and evaluate IT projects.

Worldwide IT spending has been continuously increasing and is further accelerated by the data-driven and artificial intelligence trends. At the same time, the success rate of IT-intensive projects is varying and highly unpredictable. Business case development and business case management are seen as central to increasing the effectiveness of IT projects and their governance.

The theoretical part of business case development for IT Projects will review methods for business case development and key topics such as benefit modelling, performance measurement, portfolio management, cost estimation, risk analysis, financial scenario building, ethics, and sensitivity analysis. Advanced topics include business case development for public sector projects and real options theory.
The theoretical part is linked to practice by guest lectures explaining how business cases are used as management and change tools.
Student teams develop a full business case in iterations for a real-world setting including collecting evidence, modeling, and interviewing stakeholders. The business cases are presented during and at the end of the course.
