This course has four primary learning objectives. After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to:
- critically reason about the possible choices in designing an e-business model, by applying a variety of theories. This means being able to (i) identify, document, and evaluate the differences between alternative value-sharing scenarios that implement models in at least three areas, e-business, e-commerce, and e-government, and (ii) judge the strengths and the risks of alternative value-sharing scenarios, from the perspective of each participating actor in a value web.
- apply their knowledge of Gordijn’s e-3-value-modeling method in a practical and analytical manner, in the context of conceptualizing, innovative e-commerce systems and e-businesses.
- synthesize at least two new e-business models by reusing US-patented ‘business methods’ and adapting them to new contexts.
- comprehend current and future trends in the national EC market as well as worldwide.
To achieve the four learning objectives, this course’s design includes two modules:
As the course suggests an interdisciplinary topic, it focuses on the convergence of the paradigms, organizational concepts, modeling approaches, and methods involved in EC and, therefore, it should be of interest to both BIT, CS, and IE&M students.
- theoretical foundation which helps to explain the mechanics behind real-life businesses (why e-business phenomena happen in the way they do).
- systematic approaches to designing business models, which is aimed at teaching today’s job-market-sought-after skills (e.g. analytical and problem-solving skills) by using increasingly more complex case studies of 21st century companies.
The E-Commerce course includes an introduction and two selected topics. The introduction covers:
- the concepts of revenue-sharing, design thinking, e-Business, e-Commerce, value-modelling as well as a variety of applications of these concepts;
- strategic issues related to e-Commerce;
- current trends in the EC market in the Netherlands and worldwide.
The two selected topics are:
- recommender systems.
