Nowadays, the reliability of advanced capital goods is an issue of increasing importance, given high uptime requirements and  the serious consequences of unexpected downtime. Examples are downtime of manufacturing equipment of in the semiconductor industry (by ASML) leading to costly loss of production, downtime of MRI and CT scanners (by Philips Healthcare) in hospitals causing delay in treatment of patients, and downtime of baggage handling systems at airports (by Vanderlande Industries) causing baggage missing flights and dissatisfied passengers. In this course, we outline the main aspects related to system upkeep, focusing on balancing system availability of capital goods as mentioned above versus logistics costs during the system life cycle. Specifically, we consider techniques for reliability analysis during system design, approaches to design maintenance concepts and techniques for maintenance optimization.

Learning objectives:
After successfully completing this course, the student:
  • Has understanding of the key decisions to be taken for maintenance of production systems and their relation within a maintenance concept;
  • Has understanding of various methods for the analysis of system reliability in the design phase as well as the operational phase and their applicability;
  • Has understanding of new technological advances in maintenance management such as remote monitoring and prognostics;
  • Is able to analyze failure data;
  • Is able to carry out a basic system reliability study;
  • Is able to construct basic models for preventive maintenance optimization;
  • Is able to construct basic models for optimization of condition based maintenance;
