Aims
Upon completion of the Final Project, the student is able to:
  • execute a project by following a scientific approach, and in particular, is able to
    • assess a given (multidisciplinary) problem in a systematic way to formulate/define a mathematical problem that can be solved and subsequently conclusions can be drawn from;
    • solve a well-defined mathematical problem of sufficient academic nature using the skills and insights learned during the courses and if needed, by  developing new methods and theory and applying them;
    • assess own contribution and limitations of the same;
  • communicate the project findings in written form by producing a well-structured report using clear language, and in particular, by
    • giving a clear problem statement,
    • describing the context and the existing works,
    • presenting the findings after describing the used methodology and
    • drawing clear and relevant conclusions;
  • execute a project following an appropriate process, and in particular,
    • by interacting sufficiently with peers and superiors, yet working independently by taking own initiative,
    • showing creativity and critical attitude towards his/her findings;
  • reflect on the relevance/impact of the project on the society/science;
  • communicate the project findings orally by giving a well-structured and clear presentation of the problem, the used methodology, the findings and the conclusions to mathematical and non-mathematical audience. Furthermore, the student is able to hold a discussion and answer questions from the audience appropriately.
Content
This is a 30-credit individual project in the field of Applied Mathematics that rounds off the Master’s degree programme. The project is executed during approximately 6 months at a company or institute outside the University of Twente, making a contribution to the former at the level of a starting engineer. The student is provided with an opportunity to apply the expertise gained during prior courses, projects and practical training sessions to solve well-defined problems of sufficient academic level. During the project, the student is allowed to make their own contributions. In completing the project, the student demonstrates that he is able to read and process suitable literature critically, to address the problems systematically, to achieve clear results and to formulate clear conclusions. Students are expected to report, both orally and in writing, on their findings.

The student and the supervisor make concrete appointments at the outset of the project. The supervisor makes sure that the project fits to the mission of the specialisation and arranges adequate supervision.  The supervisor and the student meet regularly with each other to discuss the progress of the project.  The student must produce a written report at the end of the project and give a public presentation about the project.

Entry requirements
Before starting the Final Project the student must have an approved study programme, of which a maximum of 10 EC (on courses) are still to be completed. The thesis supervisor may impose additional conditions for starting the Final Project.
