Cursusdoelen
This course serves as an essential preparation for students aiming at a study or career relevant to wireless/radio communication and/or sensing.
 
While radio systems are designed to perform optimally in specific application scenarios and use cases, the system design needs to be optimized to countermeasure the challenges when applied in the (conventionally regarded) uncontrollable environment. The key fundamental aspects of both the designable system and the (conventionally regarded) uncontrollable radio propagation channel will be addressed in this course.

At the end of the course, the student can
  • understand and calculate a wireless link budget
  • explain important aspects concerning wireless propagation channels (propagation path loss, small-scale and large scale fading, statistical models of channels and modulation)
  • design and implement a radio channel measurement setup for specific scenarios (examples: body area networks, in-body to body area communication link, WiFi performance indoor, outdoor LTE links, vehicle-to-vehicle, foliage, unmanned aerial vehicle link, etc.)
  • conduct radio channel measurement and/or ray tracing/launching simulation, analyze the measured radio channel and interpret the observations
  • present the project (design, measurements, results, evaluation)                    

Inhoud
This course provides the fundamental principles of radio communication and their performance evaluation. The course starts from the fundamentals of radio propagation and  digital communication, and extends to the core techniques in radio system design and the countermeasure against dispersive mobile radio channel. 
The course starts with an outlook over the most recent research developments in 5G/6G, as well as an invited talk from an inspiring academic/industry figure.
 
Specific topics include
  • introduction to wireless communication systems: applications, requirements, challenges and opportunities;
  • radio wave propagation, multipath
  • large-scale path loss and small-scale fading;
  • statistical description of the wireless channel, including wideband and directional channel characterization;
  • channel models;
  • channel sounding techniques;
  • modulation and demodulation in mobile radio systems;
