This course has a dual target. One the one hand the presentation concentrates on the problem of the specification and design of electronic systems for Mixed Analog Digital signals, on the other hand it gives a view on a number of implementations of circuit parts or basic building blocks. The examples concentrate on electronic systems for Digital Audio including Digital to Analog and Analog to Digital Converters. In these systems the split up in building blocks and the technical implementation of these blocks is very much dependent of the boundary conditions of the IC fabrication technique that is available. Therefore it is of essntial importance to find the right arguments for the choice between analog and digital implementations and the accompanying specification of system parts. The resulting system definition is the result of a number of iterations. In a bottom-up process the properties of the IC fabrication technique that is used determines the specifcation of the building blocks. Realization of the total system specification is a top-down process. This year the vehicle for this process is Digital Audio including Digital to Analog and Analog to Digital Converters. The main goal of the course is to obtain insight in the coherence between system definition, technological boundary conditions and system split-up. Insight in the choice between analog and digital signal processing the choices for Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog conversion and making the trade-offs between power, bandwidth, signal to noise ratio, distortion and accuracy against cost play an important role in the design process.
