Aims
Gain insight in the operation and analysis of analog Integrated circuits
Content
Analog circuits play a crucial role in any (partly) electronic system which combines digital signal processing with mixed analog-digital interfaces (e.g. to communication channels and sensors & actuators). For reasons of cost and size, these systems are preferably implemented together with digital circuits using CMOS or BiCMOS IC technology. This course deals with the design of broadly used analog circuit building blocks, concentrating on two aspects:
  • Ways to implement analog circuit building blocks using components available in CMOS or BiCMOS IC technology. Examples of such blocks are single and differential amplifiers, current mirrors, V-I and I-V converters, reference sources, switches, comparators, mixers. The focus is mainly on circuits using MOS transistors, but most of the principles are also applicable to bipolar transistor circuits.
  • The analysis of the main performance limitations of such circuits due to physical limitations in accuracy, non-linearity, speed, noise and power consumption. First order behavioral models are crucial for insight in circuit operation and design trade-offs. Analysis skills to derive the models and verify them versus circuit simulations are an important learning objective of this course.
Assessment
Written test, design project and oral presentations.
The written part is done in groups of two students, while the oral exams are individual.

1) A BSc course in Network Analysis (e.g. the EE BSc-course Electric Circuits)
2) A BSc course on MOS and/or bipolar transistor operation, basic transistor circuits and linearized small-signal equivalent circuit modelling (e.g. the EE BSc-course Electronics)
