Cursusdoelen
After following the course, the student can:

1.      obtain knowledge of important properties of materials needed to realize relevant microsystems;
2.      adequately express in own words the principles and theory behind;
3.      transfer the obtained knowledge on materials properties to practical examples in designing microsystems;
4.      identify the key properties needed to realize particular examples of microsystems;
5.      select, by combining relevant information, appropriate materials to realize a particular microsystem, and
6.      evaluate, using motivated scientific arguments, the feasibility of the suggested approach.
 
Inhoud
The course provides a basic knowledge in the field of Materials Science for Electrical Engineers. After a brief general introduction to the field, the emphasis is put on the specific aspects important for engineers getting their master degree in realization of microsystems and micro- / nano-electronics. Getting insight into the background of different effects and processes being of importance for the design, development and fabrication of various microsystems, is a main purpose of this course. Subjects to be discussed include (but not limited to) atoms and atomic bonds, crystal structures, relation between macro- and micro-parameters of a material, (ferro)electric and magnetic behavior, materials characteristics in general and their dependence on number of atoms in the cluster, materials aspects of thin films, thermodynamics and kinetics. Examples of application of various materials in microsystems, including microprocessors and data storage, lab-on-a-chip systems and nanoelectronic devices, are discussed.

Two main blocks are given within the course. Block 1 considers the theoretical aspects of Materials Science. Block 2 consists of guest lectures and covers the mentioned application examples. At the end of the course, students make short presentations about materials of their choice.
