Cursusdoelen
This course will be offered during the first quartile.

After the course the student is able to:
  1. Understand common models and measurement techniques related to basic properties of the solid surface, in particular microgeometry (roughness), surface energy and contact mechanics.
  2. Understand common models and measurement techniques related to basic properties materials for light-weight constructions as composites and light metals, in particular micromechanics and anisotropy.
  3. Relate these properties with functional behaviour of surfaces and solids as wear, corrosion and mechanical performance.
  4. To understand related theories and models which can be found in scientific literature.
  5. To apply the knowledge gained in other problems than discussed in the lectures.
  6. To communicate the knowledge gained both orally as well as by means of a written report.

Inhoud
Course description/ contents:
Both the bulk and the surface of many machine elements need specific physical, mechanical and/or chemical characteristics in order to show the desired functional behavior. For example, the bulk of the material needs sufficient strength and stiffness while the surface needs sufficient protection against the environment. In this course, descriptions of important bulk- and surface properties of materials will be given. Most attention will be paid to materials for light-weight constructions as composites and light metals. Some subjects that will be discussed within the framework of this course are micromechanics, anisotropy, corrosion, microgeometry and contact mechanics. The course will be concluded with assignments and an oral examination.
Contents: Properties of solids and surfaces like roughness, adhesion, contact mechanics, micromechanics and anisotropy.
